Product Questions

What is a skin?

A skin is an ultra-thin (~0.25mm), precision-cut layer of vinyl that sticks to your device (or case) to customize the look, add a bit of texture & grip, and offer light scratch protection - all without adding bulk. Skins are designed to hold up to normal daily use, and when you want a change, remove without any adhesive residue. Skins are dbrand’s original product category and offered across every device in our portfolio.

How do dbrand skins feel?

Most of the skins in our portfolio have a matte finish, with a soft, dry grip. These skins are all covered with our proprietary Ultramatte finish.

That said, depending on the design, there are some notable exceptions:

  1. Gloss skins like Obsidian, Warzone, Acid, Holo White, and Teardown all feature a high-polish, optically clear finish that prioritizes color vibrancy (and, at times, a holographic light refraction). These skins feel grippy to the touch when your hands are warm and perfectly smooth when your hands are cold or dry.
  2. 3D-printed skins like Area 51, Circuit Board, and Triple White Damascus have a noticeable raised texture that you can both see and feel. These are produced using a proprietary three-dimensional print technology which allows us to create textured patterns in a variety of shapes and bump heights.
  3. Leather skins are exactly what they sound like: genuine, full grain cowhide. As you might expect, these feel like supple, grippy, all-natural leather.
  4. Textured skins - ones like Swarm, Matrix, and Black Carbon, have textured surfaces similar to our 3D-printed skins, but with a bit more subtlety.
Which skin offers the most grip?

If you want maximum grip, go with a textured skin. Our 3D-printed and textured designs (Area 51, Circuit Board, Triple White Damascus, Swarm, etc.) add a ton of grip through their raised patterns, and our Leather skins are naturally grippy thanks to the material itself.

That said, our Ultramatte finish is a great all-around option - it adds a soft, dry grip without feeling overly “sticky.” Gloss skins can feel extra tacky when your hands are warm, but they’re smoother when your hands are cool or dry.

That said, if you want the absolute maximum grip for your smartphone, we highly recommend getting a Grip Case. It’s available for most flagship smartphone models and can be customized with the same skin design portfolio available for the skins that sit directly on your device.

Are your skins waterproof?

Yes - our skins are made from automotive-grade vinyl, the kind ordinarily used for long-term outdoor applications, so normal contact with water is no issue. The exception is Leather, which shouldn’t be exposed to more than trace amounts of water.

Will skins cause my device to overheat?

No, our skins are too thin to insulate your device (and are precision-cut to ensure they don’t block any airflow, in applications such as laptops and gaming consoles).

Can I buy a large sheet of vinyl? I want to cut the skin myself.

We do not currently sell sheets of uncut vinyl for custom projects. That said, our Razer Blade 18 Essential Kit without the logo cutout is the largest uncut piece of vinyl we sell, and is a popular choice for DIY enthusiasts. Before you ask, the Blade 18 skin is 398x274mm with a very small 2.4mm corner radius.

Can you make a custom skin design for me on a device that’s already in your portfolio?

If this is a bulk order for an enterprise/corporate order… maybe. Submit a ticket at the bottom of our contact page to reach out. If it’s for an individual unit, no. We do not offer this service direct-to-consumer.

Can you skin my device? It’s not currently in your portfolio.

If you’re a device manufacturer, this is a service we offer. You’ll need to submit a ticket at the bottom of our contact page to reach out. If you’re an individual customer with a BlackBerry Bold and desperately need a skin… please. We’re begging you. Do not reach out to us.

Can I wirelessly charge my phone with a skin on?

Short answer: Yes. Our skins have zero effect on wireless charging.

Long answer: Yes. Wireless charging performance only begins dropping once you add a few millimeters of extra separation between the phone and charger. Our skins are only ~0.25mm thick, about 10x thinner than the approximate range at which wireless charging begins to become affected. As such, they don’t meaningfully increase the coil-to-coil gap and won’t interfere at all with wireless charging.

Which case should I get for my phone?

This really depends on what you value most.

  • Grip: Best if you want maximum grip and customization. It supports user-replaceable skins for different looks, delivers solid everyday protection, and has been refined over years of iterative improvements (button feel, magnet strength, edge-swiping, etc.).
  • Ghost: Best if you want a clear case that shows off your phone. You can also pair it with many of our skins for a clear-case look while still showing the design underneath.
  • Tank: Best if you want maximum protection, the strongest MagSafe connection, and an extremely tactical look. It’s not for everyone, but if you love it, you’ll love it.
Can I install a skin under a case?

Generally speaking, skins are thin enough to fit underneath our cases without issue. That said, if you plan on applying a skin beneath your case, here are a few things you should know:

  1. Stick with the Back-only skin if given the option. Not only are Full Coverage skins more likely to prove incompatible with a case, but the edges of the skin are liable to peel up if/when you remove the case from your phone.
  2. Leather skins are simply too thick to fit underneath a phone case.
  3. Skins with a gloss finish, such as Teardown (but not Ultramatte Teardown), Obsidian, Warzone, Acid, and Holo White tend to exhibit "watermarks" when paired with a clear case such as the Ghost. As such, we don't recommend putting these designs in particular beneath a Ghost Case.
Are dbrand cases MagSafe compatible?

Yes - if the product page lists MagSafe compatibility. On iPhone, that means the case has a correctly-positioned magnetic array so MagSafe chargers and accessories align properly and hold securely.

We also tune our magnetic array using a proprietary calibration system to maximize pull force (how strongly accessories stay attached). In practical terms: more reliable car mounts, a wallet that’s less likely to shift or fall off, and fewer “it snapped on but didn’t stay on” moments.

Are dbrand cases Qi2 compatible?

Yes - if the product page lists MagSafe (or PixelSnap) compatibility. Qi2’s main upgrade is the Magnetic Power Profile (MPP), which uses a magnet array to align the charger coil to the phone coil for more consistent charging. Our MagSafe/PixelSnap cases include a correctly-positioned magnetic array and are built thin enough around the coil area to avoid adding meaningful separation, so Qi2 (MPP) chargers will align and charge as expected.

We also tune our magnetic array using a proprietary calibration system to maximize pull force - meaning stronger attachment for accessories like car mounts and wallets, not just reliable alignment for charging.

Why isn’t the design printed directly on the Grip Case?

Because the Grip is built to be customizable by design - not just when you buy it, but afterward, too. Instead of locking you into one look, the Grip uses a replaceable Case Skin that’s made to be removed and swapped whenever you want.

If you want a new look without buying a whole new case, you can purchase Case Skins on their own by selecting “I don’t need the Grip” on your device’s product page.

If you're worried about messing up your Case Skin installation, don't be. We produce step-by-step tutorial videos for the Grip Case to ensure your skin installation goes perfectly. On the off chance it doesn't, we encourage you to submit a support ticket so we can lend a hand.
